abbreviations from forums or txt

This is a discussion on abbreviations from forums or txt within the Humour forums, part of the Off Topic category; I like the amusing way people confuse "there", "their" and "they're". Also "your" and "you're"... Makes me lmfao I can ...

Makes me lmfao I can tell you

Perhaps people should learn English before abbreviating it?

EDIT: Sorry, that sounds harsher than intended! But you get my point?

do capital letters (or the lack thereof) piss you off too amanda? i used to be really picky about using them properly but it gradually just became less and less important.

Thanks Tom - and as you know I am very complimentary about your grammar (although all right is two words since you asked).

MrPlow - I don't really give the lack of capitals issue much thought, so long as it reads properly! I'm just a stickler, I even use capitals and proper grammar on MSN most of the time.

You guys wanna know sumthin really cringeworthy?

Only until a week ago, I thought "brb" was used to phonetically describe a burp(!) On MSN, I always pardoned my mates (but I did find it strange why they had to say it anyway). I never bothered to ask

My sister put me out of my misery just recently.......

I used to think "lol" was "lots of love" - I had a friend who used to use it that way on cards, notes and so on. I always thought it was strange that people in fora seemed to love each other so much!

Here are some from the old skool net:

imho : in my humble opinion
rtfm : read the freeking manual (often said to a clueless newbie)
btw : by the way
ttfn : tata for now

and some new ones:
glglglglgl : goodluckgoodluck (if you play bingo cabin you will get sick of this, usually said by overexcitable hicks gambling before work)
wtg : way to go

ttfn! That's not from the net, that's from Tigger!

No, I'm not on drugs, go and watch the 70s/early 80s Winnie the Pooh films if you don't believe me!

Oh and by the way Amanda, I'm tickled by your librarianesque regard for the English language... I occasionally suffer from that affliction...

I particularly liked the society for the protection of the apostrophe on the web somewhere. They encourage people to send in pictures of embarrassingly misplaced apostrophes by people who should know better... can't remember what the URL is but I know you would love it...

Re: abbreviations from forums or txt

i dont realy like it wen ppl use 1337 (shortening sum words is ok though) n shorten stuf down n dont use caps etc.

im not that bothered about ppl not using caps, or incorect use of the apostrafy, but it is nice wen stuf is spelt corecly wiv proper gramar.

wen ppl shorten stuf down in txts it gets anoying as i cant always understand stuf.

lol
