Life in Prison for Stealing Donuts!

Just found this video news article about a man in California who may be sentenced to life in prison because of that third strike rule they have. His third strike was stealing a pack of donuts lol.

I think it's a good law....people know the consequences and yet they choose to commit the same crime again and again. I know it seems silly, but I bet it stops a lot of people making the same mistakes for fear of this happening!

Re: Life in Prison for Stealing Donuts!

The US laws are so infuriatingly rigid sometimes! A little discretion wouldn't do any harm in this case!

Slightly OT - but ... My friend Nick moved over to the US with his wife a few years ago. He was given a temporary visa while his permanent green card was processed. They took nearly 2 years to process it and eventually it was declined due to a minor marijuana infraction when he was 19 over here. So he and his wife quit their jobs, got rid of their house, car, and got passports for their cats and started the process of moving back to the UK. A few days later though immigration knock on their door and cart him off to a detention centre and leave him there to rot for 2 months while they put in the paperwork to physically deport him! Rather than letting him buy his plane ticket and go home with his wife, he was carted away by the authorities and given nothing to read but the bible and letters we all wrote him. Horrible.

I know different states have different laws etc for a reason and a tough line is supposedly a deterrent ... but, still ... it's not always black and white.
