You generally begin by identifying a niche! Maybe you want to target gamers or smartphone consumers. So you simply begin by following the BIG fish, like Sony or Samsung, and then you follow their most recent followers and they should follow you back assuming your twitter profile is personable and interesting.

After a bit, you can start tweeting occassionally, engage in conversation with your target audience and watch it expand. You only need to dedicate 30 minutes to 1hr per day on this if you really plan on making twitter a big part of your referral campaigns... that's about it, really.

nope.. only about 600+... nothing crazy, but about 60% - 80% are targeted and are real people.. many of them either gaming... or have expressed interest in getting a new gadget "I really want a macbook pro..." "I want that Ipad2 so bad..." etc...

Thanks, bro! Each of your post here is really helpful. I have approximately the same number of followers as you, but there are hardly any who are targeted. Around 2-3%. Will now to have put in effort to get quality referrals. I tried following the "BIG FISHES", but didn't actually get any kind of targeted ones. Ummm.... I know it'll start sounding the same as I was right back in late December, but, could you give me some tips regarding how to get followers from the "BIG FISHES"? I think I have a nice enough account to attract people and have the user name the same as my website. That's it I think. :waiting for your reply, Mario:

You can either start by following their most recent followers, or you can run a twitter search for keywords relating to whatever you're offering, like... "I need a new computer", "I want an iPad", "I want a SLR Digital Cam"... etc.. - and up comes a list of real people expressing interest in such gadgets... so you can simply follow them. I always make sure my latest tweet has something to do with getting free gadgets before adding them... just incase they decide to check out my tweets.

You can always find ways to engage in conversation as well. If people are conversing about games, etc.. why not respond to the tweets and engage. Twitter is really a networking party.. that's it! Retweet other people's tweets, etc. You'll start getting noticed...

Ok, one more time...

People write stuff on twitter. Whatever's being tweeted about a lot becomes a trend. Trends are shown on the right hand side of your twitter page. You can click on them and read what people are tweeting about that particular trend.

So if loads of people are tweeting about Gadaffi then the word "Gaddafi" would start trending.
Sometimes people just put "tag" somewhere in their tweet, so for example write something about an iPod app and at the end of the tweet write "#ipod".
Sometimes, loads of people add the same tag in their tweets, and the tag starts to trend as well.

Now, you tweet about "Free iPods from FreebieJeebies etc. Join here:... etc." and at the end put in one of those words/tags/phrases that is trending at the moment. People who decide to click on a trend and read the tweets about it will see your tweet with your ref link/website as it contains that "trend tag".

At this moment in time the top trend tag is #gositinacorner - Your tweet could be something like: If you don't check this site out and get a Free iPod then you should #gositinacorner - (Referral Link/Website etc.).
So people who click on the trend #gositinacorner will see your tweet with your referral link/website and you may get a few people clicking on that link.

You can add more than one tag, so more views. You can see what words/tags/phrases are trending in specific places (eg. Trending in the US, UK, Japan, Worldwide etc.) so you can target specific countries.
