[Question] How to Advertise

I was wondering how people actually advertise their own website since my website's Google rank is extremely low at the moment.
Just like most users I've bought a good domain name, created the website in Html and put up everything on a free webhost.

I've had a look at Google Adwords but the price doesn't seem good enough after having considered several factors such as the CPC rates, average hits per day and the amount of money needed to get an adequate amount of visits.

I've tried posting some articles, link swapping, asking family and friends etc...
I've also tried creating some programs in C# to automate certain tasks for me (not spamming) but haven't had any success yet.

I think that the latter might help me earn a little bit of greens since I'm quite talented when it comes to programming but I cannot think of anything good to program.

I particularly did not create a site with self-control as the majority here, just crei a blog explaining everything. I had a good disclosure buying visits PTCs and other sites, but I'm still thinking of something stronger as well;
