You could however do foundonline.co.uk/freeiphone rather than the sub domains, that would increase SEO if the person was to get backlinks for their page.

Seriously gonna look up doing this now, and foundonline you will get the bug if you get your shiny new iPhone haha
Would the back links from a subdomain not just be the same as backlinks from a /freeiphone?

I really need to find out more about SEO!

Yes the backlinks would be the same, you could get good high quality backlinks going to both options but google and other search engines treat them as separate websites so if you had a subdomain, and were getting backlinks to it, google would rank the subdomain high (hopefully) but not the main www.sitename.com

If you had /freeiphone google would rank that page high (hopefully) as well, but it would help the main page e.g. sitename.com because it's not a separate website, just a page on that website. Generally the sitename.com site would have a higher PR and all other /whatever pages would have lower PR although some people don't say PR matters anymore.

That's what I think anyway

I'm not how it works. I will check it out.
I know that SEO companies sell back links to raise your PR so if google treats subs as seperate sites is that not the SEO peeps are doing?? SEO is hard!

Don't know about any SEO companies, but people just pay to have backlinks to their homepage, or sometimes pay to have backlinks to other pages on their websites.

Yeah SEO is hard, it's the design part that's easy!

Really? Other people doing the work for you and getting backlinks to your domain is a great way to go. My only worry would be that you lose control over the quality and source of those.

Unfortunately sub domains will not help with SEO for your main domain. If you think of wordpress.com or blogspot.com, they have millions of subdomains that are separately controlled. When you create a sub domain, you are in effect creating a brand new domain.

The only way in which it will help is if the sub domain has a link back to your main domain. So if someone puts one of your sub domain sites to good use, works on the SEO etc and there is a link back to your main domain (e.g. Site created by [your link here]), then that will help

But as Furbs has said, how will you control the content of the sub domains?

subdomains will be all created by me and will be used as a starting point for people who want to get in to the free scene.
all subs will feature a link to my main site. there are only a few bits that the lucky few with the free sub can change, this is for ease my end and so they have very little to do and just concentrate on getting referrals.

Tried to add to my previous post but got timed out:

If you choose to go down the subfolder route (i.e. www.yourdomain.com/freeiphone) things could get tricky here.

These will act like separate pages on your site. All the work you do on your own site will help the results of the other sites. All the links between the 'sites' would act as internal links so would not hold as much weight as an external back link.

Simply put, this method would be the same as you having separate pages for different deals/free gifts but with other people's ref links on them. All the work you have done on your site would rub off on all the new sites.

I'd say so. Lots of nice one way backlinks to your main domain.

nice idea. but just wondering how you will get people to sign up? It's a good deal but like how are you going to advertise it and such?

And, yes, I agree, SEO is the hardest bit!

No problem!

I've had to do a fair bit of SEO work on a few sites so have learned a lot doing them.
