Target Audience

One of the first things any advertiser does is select there target audience, you wouldn't pitch a 74 year old man the latest $300 (Yes I'm British, but the PS3 doesn't have a pound sign) mp3 player, much in the same way you wouldn't offer a 4 year old girl a place in uni, it's not against the law but is a waste of time and effort. What am I getting at, and why does this sound like a Dragon's Den esque pitch?

Overall, what I'm saying is why don't we target our sites towards people suffering from the great reccession? Or parents wanting to get thier children an XBox360? I'm gunna try it out, what do you think?

well i for one dont target old people... i let people find my site via google etc as they are interested in my site then

do we? I've never seen that come through when i've looked at sites. I admit that alot of people have been taking money from fj etc... but not people actually advertising that.

I think in terms of how you actually get people to your site. Not many old people will google free iphone will they?

I do think you are making a good point, it could be a very profitable idea to target and SEO a site specifically for a certain demographic. Certainly worth some thought.

That may well be, but I don't think anyone is attempting to pitch free iPhones etc to OAPs or babies.

Most of people's traffic comes through search engines like Googles, so the people who go to their site will have searched for 'free iPhone' or something similar, so it doesn't really matter how old they are, if they get to your website through a search engine, they are as good traffic as you can ask for...

True, but a site that says "get your kids a free xbox for christmas" in some cases could be more appealing than "get yourself a free xbox".

Yeah, it's not only a better thing to do, but people will believe that in getting thier mate/child/mother a XBox360 they are doing a good thing.

And does nobody read properly!? You wouldn't advertise free iPhones to OAP's that's what I am saying, it would be a waste of your time.

But nobody IS advertising to OAPs!!! People sites are in google for anyone to come and find. As someone said, a 74yo man aint going to type "free iphone" into google.

The other thing is why should someone limit their site to "parents getting gifts for their kids"??

If someone wants to buy their kid an iPhone they just have to type it into google, shop around, find that they can get it free and sign up to any one of our sites that are already out their!

I see your point, but I don't think it builds on anything any of us already do.

The point is that methods that work by their very definition target the proper audience.

Google results methods must properly target the right audience as you are automatically targetting people interested in a free iphone or whetever. Regardless of age etc by searching for that term they show they are the target audience.

Similarly for the old ebay method, you were targetting people interested in an item at a low price, a good audience.

Same applies for most methods. I don't see anyone posting their link's on a used car forum for example as there is no point.

So whilst it's a valid point, most people are targetting the proper audience anyway.
