Do it in pencil ?
Nothing is permanent then so no damage and will still last quite a while if it's a decent pencil, not some crappy cheap 'n' nasty from the corner shop.

Well that's just stupid. You go into a shop, pick up a monopoly game, open it, write on all the money, close it, put it back.... nooooone would notice that would they?!!

I think writing on bank notes in any way should be avoided.
First off, the chances of someone looking at a $5/5£ note is highly unlikely.
Not everybody picks up their 5£ notes and examines them.
We just take out note, check that it's $5, $10, etc. and then we're done with it.
We won't turn it over or anything.

Course, you could just pay people to do offers for you......
