How To add a password to your .rar archives (The Password Method)

Continuing on from the Rapidshare Method thread I thought I would make this tutorial to show a way to promote your ref link or site if you are distribuiting files through RS or MU.
The method is to compress the file you are uploading and adding a password to it, that password being the URL of your site, this way the person downloading the file has to look at your site's URL which could mean they may visit the site.

First of all you need to download winrar:
WinRAR archiver, a powerful tool to process RAR and ZIP files

STEP 1

Right click the file you wish to upload and click on "Add to Archive..."

STEP 2

You will be presented with the above window. Click on the "Advanced" tab.

STEP 3

Now click on "Set Password"

STEP 4

Type in the URL of your site as the password and then click OK

STEP 5

Click on OK. A window should pop up showing the progress of the compression.

STEP 6

Your .rar file is created, if you try to extract it it will ask you for a password (This being the URL of your site).
Now you just have to upload it!

I'm not sure, but I think it's possible to add a password to a zip too isn't it?

Just a thought but you could upload the rar file with a text file called, lets say "PASSWORD"... then in that text file direct them to your site for the password!

Yeah that's a good idea. And you'd have a page with the password on and underneath a link saying 'click here to get a free ipod' - or similar.

I suppose it all depends on how much you want the file you just spent time downloading lol

If I can find something useful to upload might test it out and see if it works...

Apparently its possible with terminal or with some free mac tools. Mac rumour forums are quite useful.

Let me google that for you

Apparently it makes the file less likely to be deleted. Annoys me too if i download a file and then quit the page and realise it needs a password!!
