The 'One More Person' Approach

Okay, so I've only been doing this whole 'free stuff' malarkey for about a month so far, but up until a week ago I was stuck on 1 'pending'. Now I'm on 7 pendings (plus 2 more that haven't come up yet but have registered support tickets with consoles.kudosnetwork) and, hopefully, these will turn green within the next few weeks.

For those of you blessed (or cursed) with a strong moral compass, don't bother reading any further. But for those of you who think in shades of grey between those black and white issues, carry on!

So my approach was this: Initially, I spoke to a lot of friends when I was just starting out, begging, bribing and cajoling (not in that order) to sign up and 'go green' but with little effect.

One of my friends told me that he would only be willing to sign up if I only needed one more person to qualify for my free xbox (he was concerned for the usual reasons- "it's a scam", "they're only after my credit card details" and so on).

A few weeks later, still stuck on 2 'pendings' after trying various methods to get my link out there (flyers, posters etc.) I told him a little white lie that I had 7 other people signed up (when actually I only had 2), and just needed one more in order to qualify. He signed up and has now completed the LoveFilm offer that is about to go green (hopefully!) .

I spoke to a few other friends, particularly people who had said they would sign up and take a look at the offers, but had never bothered to, and told them the same thing...that I had 7 sign ups but just needed one more.

Using this method, I got 5 friends to sign up...beast! Admittedly, I did have to bribe some of them with a few cans/pints of strongbow, and £10 for one guy, but they still signed up, despite their earlier misgivings about the whole scheme.

Although I'm no psychologist, I think this works for several reasons:

1. The 'Herd' mentality- people will do almost anything if they think other people have done it before them, so in this case, the fact that they thought six other people had already completed the offer made it seem more safe/genuine (because clearly if other people had done it, it couldn't be a scam).

2. They feel like they're doing you more of a favour. It's a weird quirk of human nature, but the last person to sign up feels like they're making more of a contribution than the first person to sign up (because they're the one that gets you up to your 8 referrals).

Has anyone else used a similar method?

Any thoughts about the morality of this method? (I am fully prepared for messages of condemnation!)
Yes, it's telling lies, but as I mentioned earlier, the first person to sign up has as much effect in the end as the last person to sign up, so I don't see it as that big a deal.

tried some methods which would be classed as "in the grey" area but would never pull this on a friend or family member, cant honestly see how a free ps3 or what ever is worth more than a possible friend for life.

Agreed.

I started speaking to harvez through another forum and he introduced me to the world of Freebies, (cheers for all the headaches so far mate :P) and after quite a lot of explanation and a good look around the scene I agreed to give it a go.

"Right mate, where do I start ?"

"OK, here is the link to sign up through. This is my own affiliate link but if you are unsure you can strip the affiliate ID from the end of it and just go direct through the site..."

For me that spoke volumes about how you value people and I thank harvez for that token of respect.

I signed through his link and gave him the green, no problem.

None of my friends have signed up, they are all too sceptical and when explaining it to them I explain it once and then drop it, leaving it up to them and I don't expect any of them to do anything they are unsure of.

Guess i'm just too soft eh

Thanks, but they haven't turned green yet...hopefully within the next few weeks they'll all go from pending to green. I'm trying not to get too excited about a free xbox cos it might all go wrong, but still like a kid at christmas atm! Am checking consoles.kudosnetwork every time I come online just in case something has happened (even though I know it won't have!)

I've used something similar in the past, saying something like, 'last few sign up spaces remaining'. Don't think it worked though.

I think your choice of language is/was probably the problem. Saying 'last few spaces remaining' makes it sound like they'll miss out if they don't sign up (but from their point of view, they're not really missing out on anything), and also it doesn't suggest that they're helping you out. Also, saying 'one remaining' is better than saying 'last few remaining' because it adds an air of finality to it- 'a few' is a vague indication whereas 'one' is definite.

Also, saying 'I need one more person' makes it more personal because
a) you've said it in the first person (I need) and
b) because it seems like they're the one doing you a favour, which gives them that warm glow inside!

Chalk up another one to the 'One More Person' method. A friend of mine who was among the first group I asked and was convinced it was a scam gave in last night and did the coral offer, went green 2 minutes later...sorted!
