i use photoshop then add html in dreamweaver, id get dreamweaver just because it has FTP features to upload to your site, plus you can display it as a test in your chosen explorer [firefox, IE]

There are quite a few software packages you can use to design a website. The most widely used one is Dreamweaver, it's a bit expensive, but you can get a 30 day trial from the Adobe website.

A free alternative is KompoZer or Nvu.

Or install a free content management system like Wordpress if your hosting supports Mysql, and download a free template. There are loads of decent ones!

I've never used dreamweaver but if someone designs a site within the trial and then wants to edit it after the trial runs out...can they do so?

Yeah, the website is usually saved in the standard HTML format. You can open and edit HTML in notepad or any other text editor.

Using notepad is good because it doesnt automatically add any unwanted crap but, its hard to find what you are looking to edit, as there are no line breaks, just code after code, really annoying to edit!

Notepad++ is better as it has syntax highlighting for HTML, CSS, and PHP among others.
