Thought I'd start a thread on quick tips

Perhaps it could give a bit of help to any new sign ups who are always looking for those how to get green tips.



Here's my first one:

I don't know if it's just me but since I started my sites my sign ups were flying in. That is until i changed my site so that the links opened up in a new page.

Since then they plummeted to non existant.

I have since changed it back and have had two sign ups within 12 hours.


I think that having them open in the same page is better than having them open in a seperate window because many people have pop up blockers now, so stops them being put through to the gift site.

Might just be coincidence though.


Anyone else got any tips?

Do you mean having "target=blank" so that it opens to a new window?

I will certainly try and see what happens.

Yeah!

as soon as I added that to my site I got absolutely nothing for about 4 days straight, but as soon as I took it away I got another 2 sign ups.

I'd be very interested to hear more about people's experience with this, I never even considered the impact.

I've also used target_blank on the basis that I wanted people to still have my site visible if they a) wanted to choose an alternative gift or b) needed to access the FAQ or other information.

The text says visitors will be sent elsewhere as my referral so they will be expecting to see a new page open.

I was thinking that might help.

The whole reason I used it was so that people could refer back to my site while signing up so they can get an idea if they are unsure, but it just seemed to backfire and result in absolutely nobody signing up.

Anyone got two sites advertising different things to different audiences who would consider doing an experiment and having target blank on one site and not on the other.

That was exactly my reasoning, but might be worth trying the other way for a bit

I have had a few more yellows sinse removing it. Seems to be better without.

I've never thought that would have a negative impact. I've always had sign-ups from my sites, but I'm now wondering if I'd get more if I changed it to open in the same window.

My reasoning for doing it was, as others have said, so that they still had my site open to refer to if needed. But also so that it would be obvious that the offer site was a separate site from my own. You'd be surprised how many emails I get from people asking how I can afford to send out all these gifts.

There's a feature in Google Analytics that lets you have 2 versions of your site and you can compare which one works better, so I might try using that to see how much opening in the same window improves things.
