Sorry if this is in the wrong section but anyways. I am really having trouble selecting 3/4 keyword phrases for a freebie site. I.e. not too general (so you get 19+million results or whatever) everything i think of just doesn't seem to have the right balance.

any ideas?

It's finding the right balance. If you choose a hot keyword like 'free ipod' then it's harder to get to the top of the results but once there you will find it more rewarding as you will get a lot of traffic.

Longer keyphrases may be more targetting but they will get less traffic. However, they will be easier to get to the top of the results with.

In my opinion there's no point going for the long keyphrases as you won't get enough traffic from them. Stick to phrases like "free iPod" "free xbox 360" "free playstation 3".

Targetting them will normally get your results for longer keyphrases too.

I'm no expert and have just experimented with different techniques. What Dunstan said is spot on in my experience, but SEO will always be incomplete (in my expereience!) without giving the site regular updates.

yeah i was going to go with the big ones like free ps3 and free ipod etc i just thought the competition might be a bit stiff. however on second thoughts it might not be that bad, although there are around 8 million sites competing for "free ps3" - the top page has a rank of 3 which isn't that high. So it would be fairly straight forward to get on that first page. What you think?

High page rank doesn't mean high search engine results. A site with no page rank could outrank a site with a high page rank so it's more complicated than high page rank = high in the results.

Focus on relevant backlinks and not just backlinks for sites with high page rank.

If your new to SEO then I wouldn't even dare try and attempt high contested Keywords such as "Free iPod" or "Free Xbox 360" since you will fall flat on your face.

Experiment, that's the only honest advise any one can give you right now, the SERPs change almost daily and sites like Google are constantly updating the way they want people ranked.

Remember also that this is not an over night thing, don't give up and always keep at it cause your site will grow stronger with age.

Im coming out of a lazy period and decided to pick 2 keywords to rank #1 with by the end of june, those are 'free playstation 3' and 'free iphone'

I also picked a longer term keyword, which will be 'ipod touch' im already #3 in the UK for it, ranking higher than some pretty big players like - cnet.com, pricerunner.co.uk, reghardware.co.uk, timesonline.com, theregister.com

Depressing isn't it, some of us work our ass off to get nowhere then someone else comes along and gets good google rankings effortlessly.

Can I ask a question, why don't you get penalised for duplicate content. I noticed your sites all seem to have similar content, I was under the impression google penalised for that.
