I'm currently working on a website to promote my referral links, what tricks of the trade are there to help get more hits (and hopefully more greens) on my website?

Well, clearly there must be ways of getting your site higher up on search lists like Google and promotion. More a web development question than anything else.

you need to search for SEO

theres not really a way people can help on here, all of what you need is in articles found under that

also dont spam google by submitting your website loads as they will blacklist your site and not show it.
just the once is fine

also use backlinking

theres plenty of sites that will provide you with backlinks
just do a search on google

you need to be a member for at least 2 weeks

then go to user cp
then
paid subscriptions then choose the subscription for exceem extra.

Search engine optimization. Find keywords that relate to free stuff that are highly searched for yet there isnt much competition for the top spot on google.
