i have a quick question about the 40GB being added. when i used to go to sonyps3giveaway it used to say something like Playstation 3 60GB, then underneath it would list the extras like 2 control pads, motorstorm and resistance: fall of man, now it jsut says 60GB PS3 or 40GB PS3.

I'm assuming the 60GB one still comes with all the extras?

Just the games, no extra controller. That package has stopped with the price drop and new 40GB release.

As of the 10th Oct when the 40Gb is released the price will be £349 for the 60GB....

60GB PS3 Gets the Chop in Europe
SCEE phasing out current top-spec PS3 in favour of cheaper, downgraded 40GB model.

UK, October 8, 2007 - Sony has confirmed reports that, following the announcement of its lower-specced 40GB PS3 on Friday, the older 60GB model will be phased from European retail over the coming months.

Sony's new 40GB PlayStation 3 slashes 126 GBP off the original price of the 60GB console, but sacrifices two USB ports, the multi-memory card slot and backward-compatibility with PSone and PS2 titles in the process.

As announced on Friday, the 60GB model will retail as a 349 GBP Starter Pack, including SIXAXIS controller and two first-party titles. However, Sony UK has told IGN, "Our offering in the UK market place for Christmas are the two SKUs announced on Friday but, as the 60GB stock is depleted, the 299 GBP 40GB SKU will be the only version available going forward".

Commenting on the new downgraded 40GB machine, Sony noted, "[it] represents all the power and potential of PlayStation 3 at a very compelling price. Whilst the feature set of the 40GB is a result of extensive feedback and research, all the 'missing' features, should some consumers require them, are easily upgraded with USB memory card readers, USB hubs, or bigger external USB or internal HDs.

"The only functionality that is being removed is backwards compatibility - and this is because we believe this less important now than when we launched, as there will be 65 PS3 games available by Christmas. Furthermore we believe we should now be devoting our resources to the future of PlayStation gaming and delivering next generation experiences".

While Sony is also phasing out its 60GB PS3 in the US, the company is offering an 80GB model, retailing at 599 USD, as an alternative purchase.

Hmmm, that's all well and good, but the Wii and 360 are backwards compatible with tonnes of systems via online downloads, Sony had better compensate for this, especially seeing as the PS2 is still a popular and worthy console in it's own right....

totally agree... plus i think there is still a big market for retro gaming... just take a look at ebay at the number of ps1 games available.

Exactly, Sony seem to be bumbling at every opportunity which is weird seeing as they had so much success with their previous two consoles. They seem desperate not to offer their premium setup for a realistic price, looks as though they cost too much to make......it's funny because Microsoft scrimped on quality, as evident with the RROD problem, but are still streets ahead.....

I've heard the new console will be be able to play ps1 games but not ps2 games. Still makes no sense to me. you should be able to play all ps games- that's one of the things about the ps3 that appealled to me. i was trying to get a ps3 through gc.giveaway but i was so far off i just bought one. I didn't want to miss out on a console with BC.

They're taking out the backwards compatability, so chances are you won't be able to play PS1 games or PS2.

it was something i read on the ps3 forum but i can't find the thread now. there is uproar on the forum and several threads have erupted complaining about the 40gb model.
