they are both the same.. people give them different names, alot of Americans tend to say inbound link (i might be wrong)

They are pretty much the same thing, although the context I have seen them used often uses backlink to mean a purely SEO link, i.e. the point of it is not to get traffic because people click on that link, but to help with SERPS. Inbound link tends to be used for both, although leans towards links that also generate traffic via click-throughs.

an inbound link can also take the form of your URL rather than your keywords - backlink is a link to your site with your keywords as the link

Isn't that an anchor link, or anchor text link? I don't think there is that specific distinction between backlinks and inbound links.

I think generally back links and inbound links are exactly the same. Yahoo calls them 'inlinks' The all mean a link from one site pointing to yours, sometimes reciprocal but doesn't have to be.
