web page problems

Does anyone know how to get an html file uploaded to a host as the main index page? I have had to redo my site in html. I have signed up for free web hosting, but I haven't got a clue what I am doing?

upload the file file as "index.html" (without quotes) and it should come up as your homepage!

Noooo!
You call the file index and you save it as a .html file!

Where you said you changed it to html.htm, rename it to index.htm!
