Help with a PC upgrade...

Hi folks,

I posted this question in another forum yesterday but haven't had a response yet, so I thought I'd try you good people. I have literally copied and pasted the original message below.

Thanks all,

--------------------

Hi all,

I am not the most tech savvy, so please be patient with me.

A couple of years ago, I bought myself a mid range gaming rig to last about 2 years. Now the time has come to upgrade. The machine still actually runs well and handles nearly everything I throw at it satisfactorily. I am playing Waorld of Warcraft (geek I know), Black Ops and Crysis 1 and 2 without too many problems, but with Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 looming, I don't want to get caught with potentially choppy game play.

As I said, this upgrade is a luxury rather than a necessity, so the least amount of parts I replace the better. I am also expecting my first child in 2 weeks, so as cheap as possible would be great.

I would like to go from Windows XP to Windows 7 64bit, so pretty straight forward.

I would like 6gb RAM, but my motherboard will only handle up to 4gb (XBlue 77A2-LF) so that is the first item to go.

My CPU is an AMD Phenom II x4 940, so not sure if there is any life left in this particular CPU, so this may be replaced depending on the general response I get.

My graphics card is an ASUS EAH-4850 512mb. Again, decent enough, but I think it’s coming to the end of it’s tenure.

Those are the 3 key components that I feel I would need to replace.

Would anyone have any suggestions for suitable replacements that would give my PC another couple of years gaming life before another upgrade or replacement is required?

If you need any more details about the system, I can supply those when I get home from work.

All advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Matt

Nero has a spectacular aura about
Go grab a copy of custom pc magazine, some useful information in there. You could build a decent gaming rig which could handle most of those games for under £800.

i'd be inclined to stick with it another year or so. if you wait three years instead of two each time then you're gonna save yourself a lot of money over the long run!

then again, i'm not a gamer!
