80 gig ps3. why sony....?! why?!

they took away the ps2 backward compatibility yet again even though the 80 gig consoles in the u.s had it all. we get it taken away from us!

the reason?! cause they wanna sell ps2 games on the ps network for us to pay for all over again, just to download. we've paid for it once sony, dont make us pay again.

probably be cheaper to buy a 2nd hand ps2 than to download a load of ps2 games on the ps network. which will probably be limited selection for us anyway, not like the u.s ps network.
now dont even get me started on that!! you can download movies from the u.s network already!!

Apparently backwards compatibility could be added at a later date with a firmware upgrade (emulation), but im not too bothered. I have a working ps2 for my ps2 games, and the purpose of a ps3 for me is ps3 games! Was a little dissapointing, but im certainly not buying them from psn!

you wont be able to buy ps2 games from PSN if your console cant play them in the first place... so obviously thats clearly not the plan

PS2s only cost £40 at GameStation now, anyway.

as for getting the newer PS3 consoles, unless your PS2 is broken and unreplacable and the PS3 model has back-compatibility, I don't see a point in getting a new console just for the extra space when you can upgrade it yourself and get far more value for money.

so I agree with the "why, Sony? why?" comment, not because I think it's stupid but because I'm not seeing much of a point to it.

well, okay, first-time customers will be better off from the additional drive space, I'll concede that.

just not sure I can see the logic in releasing a new model of console, when it doesn't have anything the last one didn't already have - they could have at least released the 80GB HDD as an upgrade for existing PS3 owners who don't want to risk using third-party HDDs, but they're possibly hoping the 80GB will convince 40GB console owners to buy a new console for the extra space.

basically.... it's marketing, really. if it works it works, if it doesn't it doesn't, but pointless or not it's just an effort at keeping their business running smoothly. and that's what businesses do. so. yeah.

this is, as you say, just for new customers
for people who dont have a ps3 to think "wow, last month i would have spent £299 on a 40GB ps3 but this one is 80GB and has a DS3 controller" which may bring him an inch closer to buying one

but in reality, people who slate big companies because they think the company is trying to pull a fast one annoy me
its the same console thats been around for a year with a bigger HD.. thats all
if you are american and think youve lost out on the opportunity to buy a backwards compatible ps3... then buy a ps2, the fact sony didnt release the 80GB Back-compat model in Europe says that it wouldnt last elsewhere
