ASUS Eeepc...

I'm a dirty poor student and thinking about picking up one of these lovelys after messing with my friends the other day...

You can get a 701 off ebay for around £130 and id prob slap a 2gb of RAM in for good measure along with a '3' mobile internet dongle for train journeys etc with some other mods in mind too.

Anybody own and use one of these?

Would it be better for me saving up for a 900-901? As the 701 is quite old now.

Cheers.

One I was watching finished at £102 this morning at 9am. I was asleep though haha.

For anyone who doesnt know what these bad boys are, they are tiny laptops that are becoming a bit of a must have with geeks and businessmen alike.

The school I worked in had some of these, although they were called the Asus miniBook for education. Same item though. I couldn't rate them highly enough for things like word processing etc. They run Linux and open office, so can easily take it to a "big computer" and print off what you have done!
I was and still am tempted to get one!

I just built a gaming beast for Uni, and I'm really considering going into my Student Overdraft to get myself an Eee PC 901.. but I'm going to wait because there's a new 1000H that's just come out and there may be more EEE's in the future with better battery life.

I'm not too keen on the 901 and 1000h casing, looks really tacky to me.

Like to see your preparing for missed lectures at uni hehe.

The text writers on the site are even better...

Unique Design to Fit Your Individual Personality
They show a picture of a nice looking touch pad and say Unique Design to Fit your Individual Personality, why in the world would you:
- capitalize each word?
- Say to fit your individual personality? How can a mass-produced product fit your individual personality? Do they look at us as kettle?

I could go on like this for at least half an hour, it is so sad, that such a great brand as ASUS (I used to be a big fan boy) tries to save money by using cheap staff... The result as we can all see is quite pathetic...

Oh well.. 95% of the population are kettle anyway, they won't notice, so I guess it's ok...

I'm more tempted by a slightly larger UMPC, like the Medion Akoya Mini (rebranded MSI wind if anyone knows anything about them). Available at sainsburys which is good since i get a discount, £299 though! Even with the discount its a bit steep!

Good spec and looks very nice too - Medion's Akoya Mini laptop gets pictured at Computex - Engadget

If it sticks the Atom Processor running at 1.6Ghz, then it'll be pretty good competition! Problem with mechanical hard drives though are if you drop it, your data is screwed!

Ive dropped my laptop loads (well not my new one, im trying to be more careful although ive knocked it off the table a few times!). But with my old laptop ive dropped it down the stairs into a wall while on, amazed the screen didnt snap off and generally knocked it all over the place! I think we underestimate the effectiveness of mechanical hard drives, just look at the ipods not using flash (current classic or even the original ipods, doesnt skip a beat!).

Amazon.co.uk: Eee PC 1000

^ Why are all the Eee PC 1000s pre-order only on Amazon? Are they the new ones, I take it?
