What Determines Applied Countries?

I find it strange that some 2nd and even 3rd world countries (i.e., Russia, Nigeria) can register at JF, while some 1st world countries (i.e. Korea, Israel, Iceland) can't. Why? What determines which countries are valid and which aren't?

I'm not complaining, not at all. I want to know how the politics behind these websites work.

I guess this question(s) is directed more or less towards the actual administrators of FJ, but by all means others are welcome to share their opinions. I advise you to. The more the merrier.

This could be the beginning of an interest debate, who knows where it'll lead.

You'll have to ask FJ to be sure though.

Well, since they lurk about these forums I figure they'll come across this topic soon enough.

Second World and Developed Countries

Do notice the attractive picture and the appealing red colour.

It was actually done on internet users (the countries selected for the drop down list are the highest users of the internet)

I will shortly be adding an 'Other' box to cover those not listed.

I see. But why do you choose the countries by the amount of users of their nationality? What's keeping you from, say, listing all the countries?

there is no 'complete' list of countries in the world. there are so many different kinds of states, many of which are in dispute over borders etc... so nobody can say precisely how many countries there are at any given time.
it gives way to a political discussion which would never end.
having a box marked "other" seems like the most appropriate, not to mention easiest, way to go

Convenient is not always best.

Of course I didn't mean that a 100% list of countries should be added. Doubt if it's even possible. But at least a list that compromises a reasonable amount of countries. For starters 100% list of 1st world countries sounds understandable. The majority of 2nd world countries.

More like, let's say someone were to be from Korea, and he were to tell the admins just that, they would add Korea to the list. Thus we'll know whom we should add based on usage rather than probability.

Personally I don't feel comfortable being left in the 'other' category.

Let's bear in mind that far from the complete least of countries currently registered have members representing each country. While, someone like me, who is interested in joining, is left behind.

Just my reasoning.
