| we only live once... | A small questionHas anyone ever actually tried to use Sign Up instead of the http://ps3.freebiejeebies.co.uk/xxxx as a link? I am sure this would work, however as I have not used this, I am not sure if this is ok. also, a question to Richard or Alex: I see you are rewriting the ?ref=xxx, could you possibly add a rewrite rule, so fj.co.uk/user.signup.php?ref=xxx would be rewritten to fj.co.uk/xxx/reg or fj.co.uk/reg/xxxx the first option(fj.co.uk/xxx/reg) would be much cooler for many obvious reasons This obviously would contribute to "the reasons why fj kicks butt"

| One by one... | Re: A small questionIt used to be all neat and tidy and use $_POST variables, but then Rich came along with his no-more-nails code and changed it to $_GET...

| ...that never gets used | Re: A small questionDidn't know you could use that sign up link. But I agree links in the form /xxx/reg would be good. I don't think it would make remembering links easier for those of us with long referral ids but if you have a short 2, 3 or 4 digit ID it could. |

I'd avoid using the sneaky link. May cause problems, as no item ID will be stored.

| we only live once... | Re: A small question1. its not a sneaky link, it is a time saver, for example: most of us have links like free iphone or free ipod touch 32gb on our web sites. At the moment when the client clicks it takes him to a gift selection page... This is ****, really ****, a lot of people do not find that "a wise solution". Wouldn't it be great to have fj.co.uk/xxx/reg/shuffle2gb or fj.co.uk/xxx/reg/macbook if fj have an in-house developer, this would be a piece of cake...

I can see what you're saying, and I'll take it on board and speak to Richard. We have a lot of things in the works at the moment (all of them taken from eXceem members' suggestions) but we have to take the time to think things through. We can't just implement them based on one user posting asking for something. For now, I'd strongly advise you stick to the referral links provided on the Refer Friends page, and we'll update you on this after we've had the chance to think it through. Charlie

| we only live once... | Re: A small questionI understand, I hope my idea will get backing from Alex and Richard Do you by any chance have designer as well? I take it you're a dev... Some design improvements would greatly benefit the site Also, take the time to learn jquery (it is so fricken ez, rly)! Some stuff you should read, if you are interested... in 2 words: jQuery vs. Prototype | Webmaster-Source from the jquery devs: jQuery: » Why jQuery’s Philosophy is Better some really good reasons: QuarkRuby: Why I moved from Prototype to jQuery and a nice little smackdown to top it all off http://michael.futreal.com/blog/0000052

| we only live once... | Re: A small questionTo both of you, why do you have to start on such an aggressive stand? I am new to the system, I come from the world of web design and in my line of work critique is essential, I for one enjoy when my flaws are spotted as then I can improve... To be the best you must have strong critique, I have learned that and am very grateful to my business acquaintances for being open with me in these matters. I take it you got offended by me coming to a conclusion that you are a dev and aren't that great with design, mate, if you want to be great, you have to chose who you are and work on that and become the best in it, I work with a lot of freelancers and I have understood that a person can only be great at one thing (design or coding)(and of course there are rare exceptions...), if you want to do both, be prepared to stay good. If my jquery comment set you off: dude, I have been using prototype till 2 weeks ago, till my senior dev dude pointed the flaws out, there are too many technologies out there to follow, don't be offended, be grateful when someone is trying to help you. I never tried to say anything bad about fj or you chiggles, I only tried to help you and the fj network to become the best, as I really like the way it is run and believe Alex and Richard have what it takes to dominate all the competitors. The only personal gain I would receive from it is: enjoying a better user experience from a freebie site. The gains you would get: massive increase in active users, a better user experience will incredibly boost the activity. I am sorry if I offended you, I did not mean to do so, I hope you understand my intentions now.

I'm not an aggressive person, but I must admit I didn't appreciate the tone you took on me. There's nicer ways of passing on feedback, whether positive or negative. As for the jQuery/Prototype comment, I'm perfectly happy with the way Prototype is working for me. If you've got feedback, we'll always take it on board, but even criticism can be put forward in a positive manner. Don't expect us to act on it instantly either - there's a lot in the pipeline, and we can't just change things when one user demands it. Now you've made my point, I've made mine. I don't intend to make further posts in this topic, as I don't want to 'embarrass' FreebieJeebies in the public domain.
