Tutorial 1: Making Glossy Text

I've made a tutorial that explains how to make glossy text. I've used this sort of effect across almost all of my sites and isn't too flashy, but still looks nice.

Steps in this tutorial can be applied to Photoshop CS2 and CS3. I'm not sure about older versions because I've never used anything older than CS2 a I didn't know what Photoshop was before then.

This is a full image, so you can right click anywhere on it and save it to your computer for future reference if you need.

Steps have been split up by the rainbow coloured strip. I'm sorry it's not so organised, this was my first ever go at writing a tutorial. Hopefully, it's easy to follow. Feel free to PM me or ask in this thread if you have any question.

There are different ways of achieving this, some simpler, some more complicated, but this is by far the most flexible one I have come across.

Something I made after playing around in Photoshop for a few minutes:

Enjoy!

I might do a video tutorial and post it on youtube. I just need to find a decent video capture software.

Anyone got any suggestion, I've tried Camtasia, HyperCam and Fraps. All of them are a bit jerky.

The best software ive found is camstudio. Its free and you dont get any watermarks or logos

http://camstudio.org/

I would also suggest downloading the camstudio codec aswell.

Re: Tutorial 1: Making Glossy Text

This is a very good tutorial... the thing with Photoshop is you need to think about what you could use different tools for... like I personally didn't think of doing that first step with the selection tool

Make the whole thing as I've shown above. Then right-click on the background image and select blending options, and add a Gradient Overlay. Change the colour of the bottom two stops to whatever you want (I used a pale blue and green). Then click OK, and OK again once you're satisfied with the colours.

For the text, again from the blending options add a stroke of 3 pixels and set the opacity to 0%. Then add a gradient overlay and set the colours you want (I used black for the bottom and 50% grey for the top). After that, add a bevel and emboss effect. Set the style as 'Stroke Emboss', and change the size to 2 pixels. Change the light angle to 135, and the altitude to 45 degrees. Also add a Contour (found under the Bevel and Emboss). Finally, add an outer glow: set the blend mode to Normal, opacity 100%, spread 50%, size 6 pixels.

Click OK and there you have it!

Just tried this...

Looks no where near as cool as what you did, but it's the coolest thing I've ever done in Photoshop, so thanks a lot !!!
