This is a discussion on Scientology within the Debating Forum forums, part of the Off Topic category; I was just wondering what your view on it is? It's something that we're covering in Sociology at the moment. ...

It's something that we're covering in Sociology at the moment. Seems like quite a touchy subject, although I must say, that I do like their advertising campaigns!

i think the majority of people have their conceptions about things such as scientology from South Park and a few vocal crazies on youtube, but generally i would think that the majority of people on here don't really know much/anything about it.

to me it sounds peculiar, but i have a limited knowledge of it. to me its no more crazy than some dude who came from the son of god and could turn water into wine, or a whole host of other religions out there.

what im trying to say is that its best to remain open minded of these things. to say "fame seeking nut jobs" is IMO extremely ignorant and pretty f--king rude.

I'm not a believer and think most if not all religions a made up and agree with larkino with his celebrity comment. People had never heard of scientology before fame hungry celebs started preaching about it.

Exactly. People laugh because it's based on a fictional book that a bloke wrote. All of the Holy books are the same apart from they were wrote longer ago! Give it a few thousand years and a lot of chinese whispers then it'd probably be the same. (If it was wrote at the same time as the bible etc).

I know this religion, I also know a fair bit about other religions, to assume I don't is pretty ignorant. It is undeniable that celebrities who join this cult are in it only for the attention.

Why is it that things like this are such a touchy and sensitive subject, when we are free to discuss other things such as political views freely?

lol, just don't criticise Lovefilm or you'll be in deep ****!!

Religion is an especially sensitive subject, I mean with Justin Beiber calling Mohammed all the names he did, I would be suprised if there wasn't a fatwa issued against him (good job that Jedwards comments about Allah were never made public)

I think laughing at any belief and its followers is stupid unless you have actually delved deep enough into it yourself to make an objectionable opinion on it, and not listening to biased articles on such beliefs. Also it just makes you look like a prick and an unpleasant person by calling a stereotype of people completely stupid.

Is that all you're going to say? I make a perfectly viable and valid riposte to your rather insulting post and you don't bother writing a real response?

A belief isn't a stereotype, it is someone's choice, as such it is something which they should be free to discuss/argue about. Religion shouldn't be something that is untouchable and is not open for discussion.

RE Scientology: This is not a religion or a belief, it isn't even granted religious stated in the majority of the world (U.K for one). It's a group set up for profit which charges massive fees just to be a member and is notoriously hard to leave.

I wouldn't say that it's undeniable that celebrities have joined just for the attention, we cannot truly understand what's going on in their heads. One thing is for certain though, and that's that famous Scientologists really like people to know that they're famous Scientologists, whereas many other religious celebrities don't keep their religions secret, but they don't flaunt them around like a new car.

There's no evidence that any of us on here don't know enough about the religion/cult or it's followings to make a fair argument. People in this thread have expressed very clear views, and while they may seem ignorant due to their one-sidedness, they may or may not have taken many different factors into consideration while forming their opinion and posting their response.

As for my understanding and opinion on this topic, I'm not a fan. Perhaps I've just never understood the underlying principals of the story, but I don't see what good it can do the world where we all Scientologists, whereas with many other religions, no matter how fictional their holy book is they at least have some good fundamentals and morals in there that can benefit the whole of manking.

Scientology's outside appearance is very flaunty and public, whereas the actual internal workings of it, along with what it's all about, is kept very hush-hush amongst members who have to pledge their trust through a large cash sum.
