| MJ lady with maracas | London RiotsFew issues to debate here I think, but before I begin I don't want this to focus on the events that happened relating to the police shooting on Thursday, I think the IPCC will do a perfect job in establishing the facts and holding anyone to account, that is accountable for any crimes. I think after the events on Thursday, and the vigil march after, I belive that others used this as a excuse to first "get at the police" (as in the recent protests for tuition fee's), which then lead on to the full scale looting & rioting on the first day. The rioting on the following days are just copycat in my opinion. So the issues to debate are 1) if my summing up in the second paragraph is right 2) the reasons why people are looting/rioting, is it just because they are bored in the summer holidays, do they feel angry to society due to poor standards in education, high unemployment 3) what we can do to prevent this from happening again 4) how can we punish the individuals who do this I think that some form of riot/looting was always in the cards, with so many people out of work, falling standards in schools, cutbacks in social support (eg job seekers allowance, incapacity benifit), along with the gang culture that seams to be mentioned in the press alot. What will be tricky is how on earth do the people responsible get punished, prisons are full to capacity all ready, proving in court they were responsible could be tricky and I can see defence lawyers finding loads of loopholes. While cutting of their benifits sounds fair, it will just cause more problems in the future, as how on earth will they have the means to survive with out turning to crime?

| Mini Mac | How to punish the rioters? As az87aris said, place them on a remote island where nobody will see them for at least a million years

Sorry if this paints a negative stereotype of the unemployed, bu I am pissed off when I see the unemployed spending the day in the pub, when I am stuck behind a desk for the same period of time, and I am no financially better off as I have to pay my rent and council tax!! grrrrrrrrrrrrr | |

| iPod 30gb | Totally agree with iks on the scroungers who pretend that they can't find work or are too ill to work but can still afford to drink everyday of their miserable lives. It pisses me off that both myself and my wife work so we can afford the basics for us and our three kids but the family who live two doors away get their rent and council tax paid and can still afford sky tv plus be able to run a car and go on a foreign holiday once a year. Back on topic I would personally like to see not just the rioters but all prisoners put to work fixing our god damn roads. We pay enough money in road tax and petrol duties the least we could have is a smooth road to drive on.

| blah blah blah | Doesn't that make you just as bad as them? They should be made to help rebuild the shops, businesses and houses that they have ruined, however long it takes and then maybe they will think again about being part of it.

| Call me Ben .... | This. The idiots who think they should be killed are hardly much better than these people. It's not like they are murdering people around the place. Just mindless thuggery.

| What to put... | Also buildings set on fire with people in and pulling people out of cars and then setting the car on fire. I don't agree with 'they should all be shot', what does that achieve? You don't know how many of those people can or will change, what positive impact they may have in the future.

| Mini Mac | Well that's good news, they are finally starting to get what they deserve. Although it is kind of unfair that the whole family has to suffer with him.
