| Simple. A chicken evolved from an ancestor species. However, the DNA structure of an organism doesn't change dramatically (apart from abnormalities such as cancer) during its lifetime - an organism's genes are determined during fertilization. The resulting genotype is a product of both the parent's genes and mutations, so at some point there must have been some combination of parents and mutations which resulted in a 'chicken'. Therefore, the egg came first. The real debate is at what point did the chicken stop being whatever species it was before. :P |
