There are times where it's better to say nothing at all.

99.9% of the time it is the best policy

I used to bottle things up and not say anything or (to coin my dads phase) when I do be honest it's like "sand through fingers".

For example I smoked when I was younger, I never told my parents and if they asked me I'd say "no" or "I was with people who were"... then when they found out I had smoked they were angry that I'd lied to them. When I was a bit older we'd had a chat and I just told them the truth that I smoked, was old enough to do so and nothing they could do about it... they were'nt angry because I'd told them the truth... they were just disapointed!

I would say tell the truth when you can, unless there's a very good reason not to. Usually the truth will out at some point anyway.

I'd say not always, but almost always.

I think lying always comes round to bite you in the ass but there are definitely times where you should just keep the mouth shut.

Its the WAY you say it.
I see you are relating this to the recent thread about dating a blind person.
Saying..

No I wouldn't
Is not the best way to give an answer. You could say something more polite or distinctive like..

'If the worst came to the worst, I would do it.'

It's much better saying like that because 'No I wouldn't' shows no respect atall. It's not being truthful that annoys people on eXceem, it is the tone it is spoken in.

Yeah I know what you mean... I have a mate that is really straight with his answers. If you get a new hair cut he'll say exactly what he likes and doesn't like about it when you don't even ask for his opinion. Or another mate got some new trainers the other day, asked this lad what he thought of them, and said he thought they were vile. Lol.

I notice that i can lie a hell of a lot - and really easily. It's strange because i think myself as an honest person, but at the same time i can lie a hell of a lot to get out of things, not much serious stuff, but silly lying really :P

Wasn't a brilliant example to be honest, I think that the option you gave was actually kinda offensive. As though it would be a last resort or something.

I know what you're trying to say though and I agree.
