| Mini Mac | Are companies expecting too much?I've been trying to find a job in computer/web design related fields lately but every single advert that I have looked at are looking for people who have had say five years experience. My angry point is that how are people meant to get experience if they don't get the chance in the first place? What happened to good old fashioned training of a new employee? Are companies just expecting someone who can do the job and do the job from the beginning?

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | You might have trouble finding a job at the moment. With pretty much all companies strapped for cash, they don't want to be spending more money and time on training when they can get someone who knows the ins and outs of the industry. I feel your pain though. I can't get a job despite having given my CV to over a hundred different places. Btw, this for sh!tty shelf stacking jobs as well, nothing too high up... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | By 5 years, do they not mean just 5 years working as a graphic designer? You could earn some bread and a decent portfolio doing jobs on DP and the like. If they mean they need you to have at least 5 years experience as an employee, then I don't know mate, it seems like you'll just have to keep looking until you find somewhere that has less requirements. Good luck with it Last edited by mcgrou; 15-10-09 at 07:46 PM.. |

| Super Moderator | Totally aggree beezer... I've had this before. It's so hard and makes no sense! I've managed to get past this by "knowing" people and getting odd jobs related to the line of work, even if it's a couple of weeks or months. I think the simple answer is YES they expect too much, especially in the current economic climate. It does seem pretty ridiculous. Still, either you've got to obey them or blow their mind with your interview skills. (I would try and bypass applications and go straight to the phone or email from my experience. I was offered a job at Rolls Royce due to me emailing them direct, whereas I was rejected from almost everywhere when just doing forms!)

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | there will be some jobs about that are asking for less qualified people, my job was just a technician but within 3mths i had redesigned the whole school network and dragged them kicking and screaming to use emails. within 6mths I was the network manager, started on £13,500 5 years later almost 30k just need to get your foot in the door then prove your worth.

| Mini Mac | cheers for the advice people. It's just such an annoying being unable to even apply for a job as you don't have the experience that is required for it. I wish places would let you prove your worth to them before even writing off that chance in the first place.

Dont worry beez, everyone is in the same boat at the moment, even if you did have 5 years experience it would still be hard getting a job. | |

| iBook | part of the problem is, when a company is advertising for a role, they want it filled for a specific reason by a specific type of person. If they employ someone with no training or experience in the field then they need to go to great expense to get you up to a level that is required to fill the role in the first place. Also "computer/web design" is quite general. Is it specific design type jobs you want to go for or computer support type role, either way I would look at self study and certification so when you go to these interviews you have something to show them. Also If something like web design you need to build a portfolio of work you hae done. This can be sites you have put together for yourself and friends and family, but they need to be good to impress them. After all they can employ someone straight into the role that can just sit down and go. It is down to you to convince them you are worth investing in. Ainslee: if you want to be a techie I would like at getting yourself MCSE qualified or similar depending on what area you are thinking of entering. If network orientated then look at Cisco CCNA kind of qualifications. |

Then was made redundant so put myself in college for 6mths to get the A+ and Cisco IT essentials certs so I could get a techy job. Worked out well as I knew networking pc repairs wireless etc etc just didnt have the quals so most companys never gave me a 2nd look.

![]() ![]() ![]() | same here when i first looking for a job, everyone wants experience, but u cant get that without working, muppets!. So i just offered to work for free just to get experience, they offered me 3 month trial with a lowish pay then after 3 months the took me on full time as a I.T techie. So i reckon you should offer to work for free or for very low pay just to get ya foot in mate.

| iBook | i agree with the idea of a volontary work ... my cousin ,an architect, worked for 2 months in a company with a very low salary ... then they have employed him ... and as for you i think they will employ you (you have proven you skills on eXceem) (PS: if you want to get more friendly with the employer tell him about FJ :P) |
