Sony to upgrade cell for PS3 every year

WatchJP conducted an interview with Ken Kutaragi regarding the Playstation 3. The basic gist of the interview is that the Playstation 3 will be what Kutaragi calls a "configuration," not a model. He says Sony will want to upgrade all aspects of the console as time goes on, such as the HDD size and even CPU specs. He also said that Sony may release an upgraded version of the console every year. Wow that could get expensive, Sony is really not thinking about us consumers in terms of cost with this console.

HG: Is it planned that it extends its spec every year like PC?

KK: I think it's okay to release a (extended) configuration every year (laugh). Though I say it like a joke, Dell will do it and Apple will do it too. In PC, if you fix (the spec) for 2 years you'll be catched up. Computers should be changing, right? It's inevitable that 60GB (HDD) will become short, memory may become short too. There are many possibilities.

well its up to us at the end of the day, if i get a ps3, i'll be happy with the first model as any upgrades wouldnt be that lifechanging.

But who knows, they may make games that need the latest upgrades to be able to play them

You can't charge such a rediculous price for something that is essentially a complete luxury that has no real purpose other than for entertainment. (unlike a home PC/Laptop) and then expect us to pay out for the latest version on a yearly basis!

Well....you get what you pay for! If its going to get better every year than surely its worth paying extra for to get the best. In every other material catogary you have to pay a lot to get the best specification and this is epitomised by the fact that the cost of a bluray player alone is more than the rrp.

Its worth paying for if you will get use out of it and want one. If not then obviously it will seem like a lot of money, an analogy of this is expensive cars!

I for one will definately buy a ps3 but only upgrade it if it makes a significant difference to the gameplay..... "just my 2 cents" as they say across the ocean!

That is amazing from sony, the psp does well but nearly all movies company dump the umd video format, if the did a upgrade every year then that is going to be mad, if the console is £300+ and they bring a new one out ever year and it costs another £300+, v smart move. Dell do it because computers change every 10 seconds, there is a new g card ever couple of month and apple are just greedy and want you money but provide a v gd mp3 player. no other console has had to do a upgrade every year, the ps3 never had to, xbox never did and i doubt the 360 will. Sony are not making me excited about the PS3, the press conf was just a mix of xbox 360 marketplace packs and nintendo wii controller montion, there research and development team must be amazin.

I'm sure there is a lot which is lost in translation here....I'm not Sony's biggest fan at the moment, but I think the guy probably means something else.

RE: The PSP....I wouldn't say it was a huge success. UMDs haven't been selling well at all. In Japan (I think it is the case in the US and some parts of Europe) the DS is outselling the PSP...in Japan it is 3:1!
