xbox 360 hard drive question

Just had a call from a workmate who bought an xbox 360 at christmas for her kid with a 4gb memory (the xbox, not her kid )

anyway, the kid was wanting to play some old xbox games which they found out are compatible with the new model but she was getting an error saying she needed a hard drive.

I've googled for her and found that to play games you need to buy a 250gb hard drive which will be around the £80, as you can imagine she's a bit gutted at not buying the bigger model in the first place but she's no idea about memory sizes etc.

I'm just a bit confused why they sell a 4gb console in the first place. Can someone with knowledge tell me the obvious point that I'm missing as I have no xbox knowledge.

4GB is more for the people that just like to play one or two games at a time, or stick to games that don't require much save data (Call of Duty etc)

Of course, if you're looking to download add ons, games, demos or even just play older Xbox games then you're going to need a bigger hard drive.

If you're wondering why you need the bigger hardrive just to play older games, it's probably because of the different engines and patches that need to be downloaded or installed to play the game. The 360 wasn't originally backwards compatible.

4GB i'm guessing is for when people save things on a pendrive or external hard drive. I don't know about xbox but i'm guessing you need a bigger hard drive to install something onto the hard drive to makes them compatible (may not come pre-installed). I am only guessing so don't take my word for it.

Also correct me if i am wrong but can't you use a external hard drive for saving data on xbox.

No, it allows USB sticks or similar, but only up to 16GB. These dont count as a hard drive either.

You may be thinking of the PS3, which does allow external harddrives to be used.

Kind of off-topic, but I just want to ask is Xbox Live Gold really worth the money?

The 4GB Xbox was intended to be aimed at families or younger children who weren't likely to ever use the console online or download additional content. Not sure about patches or whatnot, I thought the 4GB HDD should be plenty for those.

Also do you mean she wants to play old xbox games from discs or download them and play them that way? Because not all xbox games will work in the 360. If they are being played from discs, the games probably isn't compatible, whereas there probably isn't enough space on the drive if its being downloaded.

Just a note, that there are a greater variety of memory sizes if 250GB is too big/too much, but just make sure that is it for a slim console.

If i remember correctly, you need a hard drive for that too since the original xbox used to have a hard drive too so im guessing the saves will be bigger or they'll install to the hard drive in places.
