No, you'd have to pay customs + import duty when you brought it back into the country

As a member of the European Union we also have to pay tax for that too.

As generally USA is less of a socialist government they pay less taxes on a whole.

Hold on, I'm probably just being thick but since when did you have to pay taxes on something you bought in the US and brought back home with you?

I know you do if you're buying something online that will be sent over from the US (or anywhere ouside the country [or just the EU is it?]) but for something you've bought yourself in that country (on holiday for example)?

You do usually, but I think it depends on what you're bringing back with you.

If for example I went to America and bought a guitar I would have to pay tax on that when I brought it home.

Not sure what the exact requirements are for an item purchased being tax free.

For things like that, how would they know that you didn't take it there with you?

I know for things like cigs and booze, there's obvious reasons for tax and it would be obvious that they didn't take them there but not for things like this.

I got my iPod touch and a few PS3 games in America this summer and I did not have to pay customs and import tax.

Generally you have to pay customs on stuff that ships from US into the EU if it is within a certain weight. Sometimes when you buy online you can gets customs paid for you via a third party company but still that is generally included in P&P or in the price as a whole.

I just thought, does this mean that ps3's etc. have lower ref rates in the US? otherwise they'd be better off cashing out and buying one as they'd get more for their referrals
