PS3 have patched one hack earlier on who's to say that thy might not release another patch or even take legal action this. When in court who have nothing to fall back on, I really don't approve of piracy, I think it's desperate and cheap.

What legal action can they take though? If the iphone/apple is anything to go by, it is completely legal to jailbreak the software on the device that you have bought/own.

I think it's an exploit that puts the PS3 in a developer/script mode which can be used to play homebrew games

Users that have jailbroken there idevice even have warranty rights now!

I used to have YellowDogLinux and Ubuntu Linux fully running on my PS3 on the Other OS. Was completely legal and Sony intended for it. But then Geohot (the same guy that created the BlackRa1n jailbreak) started to use the Other OS to do some hacking, and then, Other OS removed, simple as that.
Would be a shame to see some other features lost due to other mods like this.

Do NOT buy that dongle (atleast not right now)...as far as I can tell its legit...but the hack is software based. It tricks the PS3 into thinking that it is a debug unit that is used by game developers for testing purposes. It was made possible by leaked firmware coding I think.
Unless the hackers can get a custom firmware running, this will be removed via a firmware update by Sony very easily. The latest update is required to play online and to play games released after the update has been released.
Wait and see a few months on what happens..then buy it.

Yep, I agree. If you buy that dongle and It get's patched wth the next update for you've just wasted all your hard earned monies, so wait a bit for positive reviews and things.

That's a sweeping statement. Although the majority do this to play pirated games it does open the platform up to wannabe developers who wouldn't otherwise have access. I've got some fab little homebrew bits on my psp for example that would exist otherwise.

Personally, I have downloaded games in the past but if I genuinely enjoy them and play them more than an initial tryout, I ALWAYS buy them because at the end of the day, we all need to make a living. I guess what I'm saying is that if more people took that view then things like this would rock for everyone!

Na, I didnt mean for piracy. Couldnt care less about that.
I meant Like Sony taking away Linux Support.
Also, I assume this Jailbreaking would be like Xbox360's JTag.
Which allows people to completely ruin the online experience for non-modding gamers.
See Xbox 360 Live's GTA IV and MW2 for proof.

I wouldn't mind if there would be an abillity to make mods for GTA 4 online like car/character mods.

This sounds great but will wait and see if Sony release an update to fix it. Hopefully they release software that you can put on your own USB pen and then might have to get myself a PS3 and a HDD!

Also I don't see how people can complain about this, is great news. Games are overpriced anyway!

@Corky, true, they are very overpriced. I mean almost £50 for CoD 7!! Actually one look at my MW2 playtime says that £30 investment wasn't my wisest one xD

The price of games is mad now. I end up trading most in after a month or so too. Anyway the gaming industry has done pretty well to limit piracy compared to the music industry and film industry, so they can't complain too much.

As for MW2, have not played it in a while. It was a great game at the start but now anytime I go into a game all I hear is interventions and noobtubes for the whole match!
