How do PS3 ids work?

I don't have a PS3, I've never even seen one (my last console was a Dreamcast).

So I'm wondering how PS3 ids work, can you have 2 on 1 console to stop a rogue parent contaminating your high scores but still alow them to team up with you on rock band while drunk at christmas?

Yes, you can do this, id's work pretty much like PC users

Is it easy to set up?

Yeah, just add a new user, and as long as you set up was an adults account your good to go ( child account requires a verification from the master account and the childs) set mine up in about 5 mins. Your only problem will be game updates which can take from 5 to 30 mins.
