Re 360 modding thread

Moderator should check and realise it is not Illegal to do this since the infamous mr modchips took Sony to court about the use of modchips in consoles.
It does void warranty but is not illegal ... for the time being

Re: Re 360 modding thread

I have no idea about any previous thread as I just got online, but:

Modchips are legal at this present time, and yes it does void warranty.

However, it's up to the Admin/Mods if they deem the material appropriate for the forum I'm afraid, and being illegal/legal sometimes has no bearing on what they want people posting on the forum. It's up to them!

Re: Re 360 modding thread

Just because something is technically not illegal, it doesn't mean the threads will stay open.

There are forums on the net dedicated to this subject, were there are experienced people who can offer good advice if you choose to modify your console in this way, while eXceem has some knowledgeable members, I have not seen anyone who I would say is an expert in this field.

However that is a slight side track to the argument that this modding allows you to play "backup's" of your games on your consoles, which I know is not the case, if you look after disks properly and keep them in their cases, it would take alot to wear them out, and if one of my disks was to wear out I would be contacting trading standards for being sold a defective disk, rather than worrying about modifying my console to play "backups"

So to clarify eXceem's position, any post discussing the modifying of consoles to enable it to play "backup's" or otherwise, or relating to downloading of copyrighted material will result in the thread being closed. No infractions/bans will be given, however that may change if someone continues to create new threads after previous ones have been closed.

Will leave this thread so you can all tell me how I am wrong and have suddenly gone power crazy etc...

Re: Re 360 modding thread

no, you're not crazy. it's a lot like torrents. they're not illegal themselves, but they're only really used for illegal purposes (only exceptions i've seen to this rule are Linux and OpenOffice, tbh).

then there's the "backup" copies themselves, and the processes of creating them. may as well just forbid the whole thing right at the top of the chain and save everybody time and effort, because nothing revolving around these topics ever stays clean.

certainly a lot easier (and less confusing) for everyone if you say "no", instead of "yes to this this and this, but no to that that and that, maybe to this, definitely not to this, and certainly to that".

i'd have made the same call as you, basically.

Re: Re 360 modding thread

I know the chips are mainly used for pirate games. But anybody who has kids would know how easy it is for an original to be damaged beyond repair. Maybe if they offered free replacememnts for damaged discs etc it may stop some of the piracy (Ok no it wont lol).

The only reason i opened this thread was because it looked as though the moderator in question had locked it because they deemed it an illegal process.

I keep my disks away from my 5 year old, and so far none have been damaged.

Re: Re 360 modding thread

I am sorry but I dont back the "backup of my original" group. I work in the industry, if you have a damaged original send it in and it will get replaced....simple as, in the UK we get canned for the prices of buying games compared to the rest of the world (In fact we are the dearest !). If you have a original that the little nipper has been able to somehow get hold of, then contact the game studio in question, explain the situation and they will replace.
I for one have just completed Metal Gear 4 and shed a tear ! as it was the best game I have ever played. A quick internet search can tell you all you need to know about modding, I dont think it's relevant to this site.

My 2 cents worth...............dam it was hot today..........maybe it has effected my brain.....and logic

Re: Re 360 modding thread

Indeed, and if I ever had kids, and they ruined a console disk due to not taking care after I had explained on how to look after a disk, I would say tough luck.

If a disk doesn't work after what is deamed to be a fair number of uses, and you have taken care of it properly, then the sale of goods act would be on your side, and as roboraver said, you would get an replacement.

Re: Re 360 modding thread

Games shops offer disc repair these days. And with most games either being multi-region or getting simultaneous worldwide release I can't see any legitimate use for modding.

Re: Re 360 modding thread

and if you're really worried about kids wrecking discs... well, be more responsible with how they're stored, and don't let children get their hands on them.

there's no reason you would ever need to use a backup copy, if you take good care of your discs....

and actually, you're not legally allowed to make backups of console games. that "allowed one backup" only works with games that explicitly state in the EULA that you are permitted to create one, and i have never seen a console game that states this. all of my console games state that you're not allowed to make copies.

so, sorry, maybe chipping isn't illegal, but the backup copies are, it would seem.

Re: Re 360 modding thread

i have all my consoles (apart from the ps3) modded so that I can play imported games before they are out over here
I had smash brothers brawl about 4 months before anyone over here!

I do agree that threads like this should be kept in the respective forums though..
If someone needs advice about freebies, come here!
If they need advice on modding, go elsewhere!

sure we like free things here, but not in that respect!
