PS3 to VGA

Can anyone recommend a decent cable to get my PS3 connected to the monitor (VGA). So far I've only been able to find this:

Amazon.co.uk: Playstation 3 Ps3 Nintendo Wii Vga Monitor Cable Lead: Electronics & Photo

... but it's a bit over my budget

Or another solution I came up with is to get a HDMI to DVI cable and connect it to a DVI to VGA adapter but I'm not sure if it would work, so I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
Omair.

Re: PS3 to VGA

it should work

no reason why not

but then you would need to use optical out to take your sound to whatever is outputting it.

Re: PS3 to VGA

I've bought an optical to 3.5mm cable and a 3.5mm female to female adapter and connected it to my speakers and the sound is fine.

Also, regarding the HDMI to DVI and then DVI to VGA, I've read in a few places that it's not possible because a cable can't convert digital to analogue signal and vice versa so I need a decoder or something. So technically, the cable I mentioned in the first post won't work either?

Re: PS3 to VGA

you can defo convert dvi to vga ... (which is digital to analogue).

I do it when outputting from my Laptop to my Plasma TV

Not sure about HDMI > DVI > VGA though ...

From what i am aware, HDMI is just DVI with sound, therefor if you convert to dvi (thus remove the sound) then i cant see any reason why you then cant turn that dvi digital signal into a vga analogue signal.

Thats my limited understanding of the subject anyhow.

Re: PS3 to VGA

I'll get the HDMI to DVI - DVI to VGA cables and see how it goes then.

Thanks, rep given!

Re: PS3 to VGA

Too late to edit:

What do you think of these?

HDMI to DVI: Play.com (UK) : Linx Luxury 24k Gold Plated HDMI - DVI 1.2m Cable : Electronics - Free Delivery

DVI to VGA: Amazon.co.uk: Cabling4Less DVI to VGA (HD15) Adaptor (M-F): Electronics & Photo

Please don't laugh at the prices as I'm on a really tight budget! , but the reviews seem fine

Re: PS3 to VGA

Please please please .... don't go buying owt expensive !!!

When your not 100% sure weather upconverting or downconverting is gonna work, it always pays to buy the cheap stuff.
That way if the conversion you are doing doesn't work you havent wasted £££'s on it.

Once your happy it works, you can upgrade the cable quality later.

Those two look fine btw.

Fingers crossed that it'll work

Thanks for the rep btw

Re: PS3 to VGA

erm...I know someone who tried this before and i'm pretty sure you can't do it. I think its cos the signal sent through hdmi (digital) is completely different from what you would send through a vga cable (analogue). I wouldn't go out and buy those items because I'm pretty sure it isn't possible without a standalone transcoder, costing around £70, and there'll be a severe time lag too. Just thought i'd warn you before you go buying stuff that will be of no use. Hope this was helpful m8

Re: PS3 to VGA

Yeah 1halfsingh may have a point.

Like i said, you can defo convert dvi to vga (cos i have done it) but when throwing hdmi into the equation it may confuse things abit, especially if the signal is totally different.

Don't go buying owt yet, i'll find out for definate for you.
