Re: Children in Need 2008

I never knew about the restriction for a raffle existed for gift aid, and any way to work around it will in effect affect the charity and their gift aid status, so I do have to stress the importance of being honest.

Perhaps a possible solution, if you were donating £10 say, would be to do £5 as gift aid, and £5 without, then state that and only have 1 entry into the competition?

How about we just just dont officially associate the "raffle of greens" with the donation, just make a donation part of the requirements for the draw and also something else (like posting in a thread saying theyve donated) then we are being honest in the sense that the donation alone isnt being used in exchange for a entry into a competition.

Re: Children in Need 2008

Because it is still linked to the raffle.

Even if I was to later on arrange a raffle/random giveaway amongst the donating members, it would still not be within gift aid guidelines.

OK im sure im not the only one, but i rather sacrifice my raffle entry and ensure more goes to charity than not give the extra. But we did the same thing last year didnt we with a competition, have the gift aid rules changed?

Re: Children in Need 2008

Ok guys, dug this up from the hmrc website (HM Revenue & Customs: Section B: Gift Aid for Individuals from April 2000)

Quote:
3.8.4 Subject to the benefits rules outlined below in Section D, outright payments to a charity in return for services, rights or goods are not gifts to charity and so are not eligible for Gift Aid tax relief. For example, the following cannot come within the Gift Aid scheme:

Payment

[...]
for raffle or lottery tickets (including 100 clubs etc). The payment to purchase a raffle ticket from a charity is not a gift to that charity but a payment for the right to enter the raffle. It is immaterial that the chance or expectation of winning a prize is small or that the value of the prize maybe negligible
What that is saying is that if you are purchasing a raffle ticket from the charity you are donating to, you cannot add gift aid as it is not a donation, but a purchase.

In this case, we are making a donation to the charity. The raffle is not provided by that charity therefore the donations are eligible for gift aid.

So, when you donate, please do add gift aid - it is perfectly acceptable to do so.

Saves me ringing up the charities commission and asking for their advice.

Just to make things crystal clear, any prizes in this raffle/comp are being donated by companies not linked in any way to BBC's Children in Need

Re: Children in Need 2008

Yeah, but obviously only add it if you are working and have paid income tax to the amount that can be claimed
